Day ME

Day MEAs the trees blossom and the heat turns up, the clothes start to come off. Are you ready for the summer? Have you started the celebrity diet that will have you lose 30 pounds in 5 minutes, or started popping the pills that promise to have you looking like Jennifer Alba in a week. Why is it that so many of us feel that we have tried everything and yet we remain the same?

The reality is that we don’t try everything, we try a few things and when they don’t work first time rather than changing our approach we do the same thing that didn’t work the first time all over again? You follow me? We follow the same path to no results. This continues until eventually we rationalize the shape we are in by blaming time, our kids, our jobs, the cat, the lady that lives down the road, whatever or whoever it takes to blame to make ourselves feel better. Let me let you in on a little secret; lasting change is possible. BUT, there is always a but (usually it is too big) you need to put in place a plan, and I don’t mean I want to lose 25 pounds in 6 weeks, I mean a success plan based on the principles of Priority / Time and Willpower.

Priority:

If getting into shape isn’t top of the list then you should scrap it all together. In my 10 years in the industry of health and wellness the only people that get results are the ones that make it a priority, if it isn’t a priority you won’t do it. You’ll talk about it, but it won’t happen. It has to be a priority, it doesn’t have to take over your life but it has to become a part of it. Just like you wouldn’t go a day without brushing your teeth you now need to think about not going a day without doing something for your health. Priorities are funny things, they should be dictated by you, your life, your priorities but far too often our priorities are dictated by others. You are your biggest asset; you need to make sure you are functioning at the best of your ability to care for those around you. Take action. Write it down. This summer is all about you.

Time:

We aren’t all born equal, we aren’t all born into the same economic setting, we don’t all have the same benefits or encounter the same challenges, but we all have one thing in common, Time. We all have 24 hours a day, 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute, it is what we do with the time or the story we tell ourselves about why we don’t have time that stands in the way of us achieving so much more.

Make time. Life is short, get up an hour earlier, go to bed an hour later, make time for your body, your hour of power, once a day. That is it. If you don’t think you have the time now then sit down with a pen and paper and map out your week. Is there ever a time when the kids are at soccer or having a piano lesson and you are just sitting. Make this your hour. Again when you prioritize, there’s that word again, your time and plan to have the time to exercise your body and mind, then you will make the time.

If you can’t make the time, then it isn’t a priority and you won’t change or get the results you want. I always use the adage with my clients that if you went to the doctor and he said you needed to sit on a kidney dialysis machine for an hour a day 5 days a week you wouldn’t tell him you don’t have the time, you’d make it a priority and it would happen. Plan your days, be effective and make it part of who you are.

Willpower:“I can’t change I will always be this way,” “it’s in my genes”, “I am too old for this”. Heard these statements before? Chances are you’ve used one of these before. These are what we call softeners, they lessen the impact, they make being you easier, and they are excuses. You want to change, lose weight, get fit, touch your toes, give up smoking, kick the booze? Set a date. Put it in the diary.

Call it day ME, the start of a newer healthier you, a day when you stop telling yourself how you can’t do something and start planning to get your health, body, mind and soul to a point where you are at ease with yourself. Sounds too good to be true? It really isn’t and over the coming months I am going to coach you through making lasting change. But it starts with you. Are you in a place where you now want to change; you are ready to make it a priority to invest time and accept that there will be challenges along the way? Set yourself a goal, a dress size, an event a holiday, whatever it is, right it down, pin it to the fridge, put it on a post it on your computer, make it as the welcome message on your phone to remind yourself of why you are making the healthier choices, shout it out, tell your nearest and dearest, create a blog, a diary to document the changes as they happen. Be proud of who you are and what you stand for.

I am yet to meet someone who says to me I am delighted that my weight has become a serious health concern, or that they love the fact they smoke and how good it is for them. Be that person who breaks the mould, steps out of the box, and stands up and says I am making changes and I am better for it.

Now, this is just the start. There are no quick fixes. Diet pills and crash diets don’t work, and invariably cause more harm than good. From today, set the date, take action. When is Day ME?
