The truth about adult acne

Acne is an unfortunate part of growing up, but if you're still struggling with bumps and breakouts into your adult years, the issue may be getting old. Not only can such skin imperfections lower your self esteem, but the problem could be making your more self conscious as well. NBC Today discussed the ins and outs of adult acne to give sufferers the reason breakouts occur and offer advice on curbing the issue once and for all.

Why acne exists
One of the biggest questions people with adult acne have is "why am I getting these breakouts?" According to a dermatologist who spoke with the news source, acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S., affecting more than 17 million people, the majority falling between the ages of 11 and 30.

The issue stems from the skin's oil glands, according to the doctor. When the glands produce too much oil, it can lead to problems like cysts and blackheads. The problem is made worse by bacteria called P. Acnes, which can multiply in the oil glands, leading to irritation and redness. Some people may experience worse breakouts when they're hormones are imbalanced - during puberty, pregnancy or prior to their menstrual cycles.

Ways to curb outbreaks
Even though there is no real cure for adult acne, there are ways to keep redness and outbreaks at bay. Trying different dermatologist prescribed medications may keep pimples in check, as could using certain skin care beauty products to repair your skin.

According to SheKnows Skin & Beauty, making sure to cleanse your skin with a gentle face wash each day is a must. You should follow up this routine with an application of a toner to help remove excess oil, and then moisturize your complexion with a light cream that won't clog pores.

Opting for a wash like Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Facial Wash might be best, since it works to act as both a wash and a toner by stimulating the skin's natural renewal cycle, while removing dead skin.

Treating yourself to weekly exfoliation treatments using luxury spa products and switching up your current diet can also improve your complexion.

The news source reports drinking plenty of water helps to hydrate your skin and diminish imperfections, while avoiding refined carbohydrates and too much sugar could also help reduce your acne.
