Tools and tips for perfect nails

You might think swiping on a couple coats of professional nail polish might be enough to take your nails from drab to fab. However, for a truly polished look, you're going to need a few more tools and tips. From cuticle creams and nail clippers to cloths and files, there are likely a few helpful items that you've  never even thought about using for your mani-pedi. Here are the best tools for perfecting your tips.

Unique tools around the home
First up on the list is a drinking straw.  That's right, while you may use these to enjoy a cocktail while your nails dry, straws can actually help you create unique, personalized designs, Women's Health magazine reports.

For this trend, simply grab your favorite metallic polish like CND Nail Colour - Chromes in Silver Chrome and then dip the rim of a straw into the polish. From here, lightly press the rim all over each on the nail to create your own pattern of rings and circles. You could even create crescent moon shapes by just using part of the straw tip.  the sassy and stand out style.

The next surprising household tool is paper towels. Not only can these be used to help clean up accidents, but they can also act at an instant tool for creating texture. If you want to spice up your light pink or peach application without going overboard, try grabbing a small piece of paper towel and dip it into the polish of your choice. After dipping and blotting the excess polish, use the paper towel to gently dab your nails, similar to sponge painting. The look will resemble a sleek snakeskin pattern that your friends will certainly be jealous of.

Other household items that can be used to accentuate your nails include a bobby pin, which is perfect for creating cute little dots, and tape, which can help you try color blocking and other patterns.

Trends to try this summer
Now that you've got a few tricks under your belt to enhance your nails, you might want to learn what styles are hot for summer 2013. According to Euro Fashion magazine, there are plenty of options to attempt during the warmer months - possibly enough to showcase a new look each week.

One of the hottest styles to try is ombre nails. Whether you prefer to rock lighter hues like orange, pink and white, or more dramatic options such as teal, blue and green, doing so is made easier by using tape to start and stop each color in a natural way.
