Quick workouts help you make the most of summer leisure time

When the sun's shining and everyone's out lounging at the pool, getting in a game of softball or hitting the beach, the last place you want to be spending your time is at the gym. Luckily, there are several quick, yet intense workouts that can help you maintain your six-pack without wallowing away on the treadmill.

In many instances, the best way to stay tight is to begin a circuit training routine. Here are a few exercises that will help you feel your best and get you back to enjoying the summer weather in no time.

An all-over burn
The first step in your quick, but not so easy, workout is to perform a series of squats, thrusts and presses, according to Marie Claire magazine. For this set, start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold five pound weights in either hand. Squat down as if you were going to sit in a chair, going far down enough for the dumbbells to reach the floor with your arms extended. 

From this position go into a plank - with your body straight, allowing your core to support your weight. After holding this pose for five breaths, get up slowly, performing a bicep curl as you get to standing position. The pros at the publication suggest doing as many of these reps as you can in 30 seconds.

Plank you very much
After you've done plenty of squatting and pressing, it's time to get in more planking. For the next 30 second exercise, start in a high plank position - your body straight out with your arms fully extended like the starting position of a push-up. After holding your plank for a breath, reach your right arm up toward the ceiling, turning your body to the side wall to come into a side plank. Hold this for a moment before going back into the high plank. Do as many of these as you can in 30 seconds.

Try to complete three rounds of these exercises to get the most out of your circuit training. With all exercise techniques it's important to properly stretch before and after to keep aches and pains at bay. The experts at the American Council on Exercise also recommend wearing appropriate shoes, listening to upbeat music and staying hydrated as some of the most important tips to have a great workout.
