Fighting the clock: Tips to reverse signs of aging

There's no way to stop time, but you can make some changes in your life that can slow the signs of aging. What you might not know is that some of your everyday habits are actually accelerating the process, and by tweaking those tendencies, you could look and feel years younger. Whether you're battling fine lines or deeper wrinkles, consider these strategies, tips and skincare products to hold on to a youthful appearance for the long-term.

Diet and exercise
You are what you eat - and certain foods can make you look younger, while others do just the opposite. As a general rule, you probably already know that it's best to avoid sugar or processed foods. So which ones should you focus on?

Cucumber is obviously an ideal diet option because it's extremely low in calories. Additionally, Women's Health magazine explained that the peel contains silica which helps to build collagen, ultimately fighting wrinkles and promoting more supple skin. Toss a few slices into salads, add some to your sandwich or even blend them into a veggie shake.

Dr. Kristine Clark, director of sports nutrition at Pennsylvania State University, told Women's Health that vitamin E deficiency can have a big impact on the texture and appearance of your skin. Not only that, but your skin is more prone to free-radical and UV ray damage. She stressed that vitamin E can act as a barrier to shield the fatty acids around each skin cell. Try snacking on pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds, which are both packed with this essential vitamin.

Dry, flaky skin can actually be a sign that you're not getting enough omega-3 fatty acids. According to Clark, these healthy fats can help restore moisture to your skin. Rainbow trout is an excellent source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which can keep cortisol under control while helping to facilitate skin cell turnover and repair. Clark noted that salmon is another good choice, but has less EPA.

Whatever you do, don't skip meals in an attempt to look skinnier. Master trainer Linda Taylor at Bodyism told Marie Claire that eating regularly is crucial, because otherwise your body goes into starvation mode, causing the stress hormone cortisol to rise rapidly and drain the color out of your skin.

You're already aware that exercise helps you to feel younger, but did you know that it can help to ward off saggy skin? You don't even need to engage in strenuous workouts to reap the rewards. Liz Miersch, certified trainer, told Refinery 29 that when you stay in one position for long periods of time, your muscles, tissues and joints age faster. Movement helps to restore the fascia, which is the framework that supports your muscle tissue. According to Miersch, dynamic moves that engage multiple parts of your body are the most beneficial. For example, lunges with simultaneous bicep curls, or squats with a tricep press. The more muscles are involved, she said, the more elastic your fascia will become.

Rest and relaxation
The importance of getting your beauty rest may actually have some scientific support. It's no surprise that sleeping is crucial to both your well-being and your appearance - after all, when you're tired, you typically have a dull, worn-out complexion and dark circles under your eyes.

Recently, a physician-scientist at University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center conducted a study, which found that people who get inadequate sleep demonstrated more signs of skin aging and slower skin repair from sun exposure and other environmental factors. Significantly, poor sleepers had a greater amount of fine lines, uneven pigment and lower skin elasticity than participants who got more rest.

Aim to get at least six to eight hours every night, and you'll look - and feel - refreshed.

Skincare and supplements
Regardless of your healthy habits, sometimes you need some help from the right beauty products to reduce wrinkles and regain your youthful glow.

A powerful eye cream is a key component of your skincare regiment, as that's the area that tends to show the effects of aging first. Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Renewal combines amino acids, antioxidant-packed beta carotene, wrinkle-fighting padina pavinica and multiple vitamins from green algae and chlorella for a taut, plump complexion. In fact, research determined a visible reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by up to 60 percent in just 28 days of use.

Supplements can also help to promote brighter, youthful looking skin by providing cells with the nutrients they need. Break Elemis Cellular Recovery Skin Bliss Capsules and apply the contents to your face for an instant detox and extra moisture. The capsules are chock full of antioxidants that can reverse negative impact caused by environmental stressors. The formula is also infused with ultra-nourishing moringa oil, which nourishes the skin, as well as soothing lavender and rose.
