Find the perfect shade for brunettes

Now that winter is right around the corner, it's time to say good-bye to your lightened locks. The cooler season calls for darker hues - but that doesn't mean the color can't be as fun or shimmery as your beachy blonde strands. Fortunately, brunettes have a wide variety of shades to choose from, with hues complementing every skin tone and eye color. Best of all, darker shades tend to require less maintenance and upkeep than blonde or red, so you'll worry less about unsightly fading and showing your roots.

Whether you're a natural brunette or a blonde who always wanted to explore your sultry side, take a trip to the hair salon this winter season and find the right shade of brown using these beauty tips:

For fair skin
Unless you were born with naturally dark brown or black hair, pale-skinned women should stick with medium shades that have reddish undertones to enhance their skin. A chestnut brown with face-framing highlights also works great for those with fair skin and brown eyes, while a light, golden brown with blended highlights will add color without being too overbearing.

For olive skin
Medium and dark ashy brown shades fit those with an olive skin because they amplify the cool undertones. To add some depth to the look, colorist Marie Robinson told Allure magazine that ombré caramel highlights from the middle of your strands all the way to the ends will warm your skintone and accentuate a long, layered cut. A soft black color also works great on those with olive skin, Robinson said.

For dark skin
Those with a darker skintone should opt for either a natural-looking smoky brown or, for a more striking look, a cool, deep shade. For extra height, add in some amber red highlights that will bring out your skin's warm undertones.

A few rules
If you don't want a dramatic change, then choose a hue that's within two shades of your natural hair color. This will not only make for an easier transition into a darker shade, but will also give you the most flattering finish. Before you commit to a color, also consider how much maintenance you are prepared to undertake - brown hair dye with red undertones gives off a rich auburn shade, but it might also fade to an unattractive brassy color more quickly than cooler hues.

For an extra color lift, liven your locks with an all-over mist of Steiner Gloss Mist Shine Spray to achieve a healthy sheen.
