Rethink your gym makeup routine

If you're used to running to the gym after your workday, you might end up working up a sweat with foundation and eyeshadow still clinging to your face. While it's hard to remember to remove your makeup when you're trying to squeeze some exercise into your busy schedule, new research has found that working out while wearing cosmetics can compromise your skin. 

"Wearing makeup at the gym is just about the worst thing you can do to your complexion," Dr. Ava Shamban, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA, told Fox News Magazine. "Combined with oil and perspiration, it creates a pore-plugging sludge that can result in blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, ashiness and allergies."

So, what can you do to prevent damage to your skin while you're hitting the elliptical or perfecting your yoga moves? Here are some helpful skincare tips:

Pack your gym bag right
Before you even get to the gym, you need to make sure your bag is equipped with all the proper items. A towel, a gentle cleanser that's fragrance-free and makeup-removing wipes such as the FreshSkin by Elemis Make-Up Away Cleansing Wipes are essential items for every gym carrier. If you like to hit the gym during lunchtime, then also add in a bottle of dry shampoo to eliminate the excess oils from your hair without jumping in the gym shower. Pre-workout
"When you work out, your sweat glands and pores open up to aid the body in cooling down and releasing heat," Dr. Tony Nakhla, a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California Irvine, told the news source.

So, the more makeup that gets stuck in the pores, the more likely it will result in unwanted acne and blackheads. In order to maintain a clear, blemish-free complexion, wash your face even before you attend your Pilates or spinning class - especially if you have oily skin or are prone to acne. Then, use wipes to clear your face of the tough-to-remove makeup that a soap or cleanser won't take off. New York-based dermatologist Dr. Adam Friedman explained to the news source that applying a facial moisturizer after you cleanse your face will help trap in moisture and safeguard your skin from sweat, which can irritate your skin. 

Post-workout
The sweat and oils on your skin will dry and clog your pores the longer you let them linger on your face, so don't dilly-dally after your workout - washing your face immediately after exercising will give you the best results. Once you wash your face, blot your hairline with wipes or paper towels to remove the oils clinging to your roots.
