With so many reasons to celebrate this winter season, your hands will be busy. Gifts need to be wrapped, elaborate meals need to be made, evenings need to be enjoyed and, of course, shopping must be done. For most of these occasions, you will be around friends, family and other acquaintances. Make sure your hands are well-manicured and decked out for their debut with a few popular nail art looks.
Red is the new "in"
Spring and summer were the seasons of the flashy and the bright. This winter, however, Cosmo suggested that a return to the sophisticated glam is what's trending. Reds, in all different shades, are taking center stage. An all-over red, for instance, lets people know you're in charge. Using a glossy polish with just a hint of shine will make this nail look come to life against dark fabrics. Pair these hands with elegant black lace for a sultry throwback to the '40s or pull on big, cozy sweaters to wear the reds comfortably.
Add a depth to the polish by creating a two-tone ombre nail
Although the combinations are limitless, for your first attempt, try starting with a lighter shade as the base. Pull the polish all the way down the nail, and make sure to fill in any missing spaces. After letting this coat dry, add another layer to ensure the color ends up vibrant and long-lasting. Then cover all but about 5mm of the nail with tape (any kind will do), leaving only a small width of red showing between the tape and the cuticle. With a darker color, like plum or charcoal, fill in the exposed area and wait for the pigment to dry. Once dry, carefully remove the tape and inspect your masterpiece. Before applying a protective top coat, clean up any accidents with a cotton swab and a little bit of nail polish remover.
Even though any colors will do, as red is the go-to polish for the season, try blending a few complementary colors for the ombre. Kits, such as the CND Vinylux - Reds, are an excellent way to build flawless texture without having to hunt down a color wheel. If you aren't sold on red, classic black is also making a comeback as one of this season's must-have shades. Try mixing this color with a bold silver or a gold for a festive New Year's Eve look.
