Foundation is the first step for any flawless face

Regardless of the look you're going for, achieving a smooth, flawless complexion is the first step. When your skin looks good, it will provide a lovely backdrop for the makeup artistry you're planning for your eye and lips. Knowing how to get there, however, requires more than finding the right shade. With so many different kinds of foundations on the market, learning how to use them all effectively can be daunting, but with the following beauty tips, you'll always know what to do:

Choose between liquid or powder
There are a few reasons that you might prefer one type of foundation over the other. Consideration of your skin type, such as your level of sensitivity to certain products, certainly plays into your decision to opt for a liquid or powder. What's most important is picking one foundation and sticking with it. Both formulas approach the complexion differently and have their own finish. Women who prefer a radiant, luminescent look, for instance, typically go for a liquid foundation, whereas powders provide a natural, matte appearance. If you're hoping for a blend of both, you could easily top off a liquid with the Colorescience Pressed Mineral Foundation for a little extra coverage.

Don't forget the primer
This step is crucial. No matter which foundation you prefer, your complexion should always be protected with a primer. Although most formulas are safe for long-term wear, makeup is a highly pigmented substance that can clog pores and create blemishes if left on the surface of the skin. With a primer, however, you can extend a foundation's wearability and protect your face from excess build up of product at the same time. The Elemis Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm is an example of a primer that will protect your skin and provide an extra splash of natural-looking shimmer.

Bring a powder with you
Even if you're a fan of liquid foundations and have dutifully applied a primer, you might find that, throughout the day, your makeup starts to run. In a perfect world, this wouldn't happen, but that's why pressed powders are so portable. With just a quick swipe of the sponge, you can correct any spots that might be separating due to an overproduction of oil. Also, if you get into the habit of carrying it with you, you'll always have a back-up complexion product with you - just in case.
