How to paint flawless watercolor nails

Between professional manicurists and crafty DIY mavens, there is some very impressive nail art out there. Whether you don't have the time, patience or a steady hand to pull off the chic designs and details from Pinterest and Tumblr, do not fret. There's a nail trend for the mildly-apathetic and uncoordinated among us: watercolor nails.

Before you get to painting, Cosmopolitan magazine recommended prepping your nails and cuticles. Use a CND Koala Buffer to make a nice round shape and smooth out the edges of your nails. Moisturize your cuticles if necessary, then push them back toward the nail bed.

Try it this way
Paint your nails with a top coat, then cover with two layers of white polish. Check out the five different shades of white available from CND Nail Colour. Let these two coats dry completely before you move on to the colored polish.

Cosmo discussed a way to achieve the look using nail polish remover and a paintbrush. Choose a few colors and drip some onto a piece of tinfoil or another disposable palette. Use a small cup or shot glass you don't mind removing from your collection and fill it with nail polish remover, preferably one with acetone.

Put a drop of each color onto your nails then dip your small paintbrush in the remover. Swirl the paint brush over a color on the palette to thin it out then apply to each nail. Add colors one at a time, always alternating between remover and pure polish. Blend the colors together on your nails to soften them with a little remover on the brush to diffuse the hues. When your 10 masterpieces dry, apply a top coat.

...or this way
Fashionista suggested another method of achieving the watercolor aesthetic. After blotting each color onto your nail, use a plastic sandwich bag to mix the shades while they're still wet. Once the polish dries, add a top coat.

These tutorials both use pastel colors, such as the lighter shades of CND Pink Nail Colours, because they don't need as much thinning out as dark hues. However, don't be afraid to branch out and try incorporating brighter or bolder colors.

Now that your nails are looking fancy without the fuss of detailed design, it's your turn to show them off on the interwebs. Post some hand shots on Pinterest, Instagram or Tumblr and see how many people love what you've done.
