VMA roundup: Makeup tips from the red carpet

Each year, a handful of the world's hottest singers make daring fashion decisions at the MTV Video Music Awards. Some of the most iconic ensembles have stemmed from these events in the past, such as the rubber bikini sported by Miley Cyrus at the 2013 show or the meat suit donned by Lady Gaga at the 2010 awards.

This year's show saw its fair share of questionable outfits, but it also produced some of the most elegant and copy-worthy styles that may mark the upcoming trends of the new season.

Look to these standout stars if you're looking to steal the steamiest looks from the show.

Bey's body glitter
Right before the undisputed queen took the stage to perform a medley of her self-titled album, Beyoncé uploaded a series of images to her website teasing the outfits to come. The singer added several headshots of herself coated in full body glitter, displaying a variety of hues and colors that subtly foreshadowed the performance to come. The songstress performed her 16-minute set in a jewel-crusted onesie, while her backup dancers were covered in similar glitter shades that were previewed in her images.

Body glitter can be a fun addition to any outfit, but it can also be dangerous if you accidentally go overboard. For a more refined glitter look, start by sweeping your eyelids with a shimmery shadow, such as one found from the Colorescience Corrector Palette - Light to Medium. Using a small makeup brush, dip the end in a small container of glitter and gently coat the lid. Apply another shade of your shadow to set the glitter in place.

Katy Perry's denim dream
As an homage to the power couple of the early 2000s that was Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Riff Raff showed up to the event wearing denim from head to toe. In addition to a patchwork denim gown, Perry sported shoes, a choker necklace and a purse all made from the same material.

While you may not be rocking an outfit entirely composed of denim, Perry's ensemble does give some important style clues for any person rocking a monochromatic look. The 29-year-old singer rocked blue in her outfit, but sported a striking red on her lips. The shade went well with her deep brown hair, as the darker hue accentuated her bright pout. If you're wearing an outfit comprised completely of one color, follow in Perry's shoes and pick a dramatically different shade for your lips. Be sure to coat your selection in a shimmery gloss, such as the FreshSkin by Elemis Loving Lips Quenching Lip Balm

"Bang Bang" babes in black and white
Nicki Minaj, Jessie J and Ariana Grande were out in full force while performing their summer smash "Bang Bang." Minaj may have had a wardrobe malfunction in the middle of the song, but that didn't stop these divas from looking fierce. All three sported outfits made from just two shades - black and white. Their makeup selections, however, were anything but cut and dry.

Grande sported enviable smoky eyes, with a cat eyeliner and deep brown base. Jessie J made a bold statement with her deep red lips and neutral eyes, both of which stood out against her mostly-white dress. It was Minaj, however, who took the makeup crown. The 31-year-old recently made headlines after ditching her ornate and colorful signature selections for a more natural, refined look. The star looked stunning on stage, wearing little more than beige eyeshadow and a neutral lip. Achieve equally-enviable skin by dusting your face with a quick sweep of the Colorescience Pressed Mineral Foundation, which comes in a variety of shades for any skin tone.
