Score the perfect scent

Score the perfect scent

Though you might peruse the aisles of the drug store for hours to score the best smelling hair products, this task can be even more difficult if the scent you're searching for is a new perfume. With so many unique options on the market, it's very challenging to figure out the best smell for you - especially since your head is likely spinning after just a few minutes of testing the products.

If you've been wearing the same scent since you were a teen because you can't seem to get over the anxiety of trying out new fragrances, the time to woman up is upon us, and going in with a plan might be your best chance at success.

Prep your nose
Women's Health magazine recently sat down with a nose expert to share his secrets for selecting a suitable fragrance. The first step, according to the guru, is to train your nose, similar to training your body for a marathon or other sporting event. A great way to do a little nose workout is to head to the nearest grocery store to practice smelling and identifying different foods. Another training tip? Go wine tasting, since your sense of smell and taste are closely linked.

Take your time
When you want a pair of shoes, you likely head to the mall, pick out a style you're craving, and purchase the heels. However, when it comes to perfume, the task shouldn't be an impulse buy. The nose expert recommends instead that ladies set aside a full hour to test between two and three unique scents.

During this time, spray each on your skin in various places and then walk around for about 15 minutes before smelling to allow each to fully seep into your skin.

Know your type
According to SheKnows, another important step in picking a perfect perfume is to know what type of scent you're most drawn to. For example, do you prefer flowery girly smells like lavender and hibiscus or muskier sexy scents like vanilla and clove? Figuring out what you enjoy smelling prior to heading to the department store can help you narrow down your search significantly.

An easy way to help decipher your favorite ingredients is to look at the type of body lotions you use. For example, if you get soft skin using CND Scentsations Honeysuckle & Pink Grapefruit Lotion, you should look for a fresh and citrusy perfume, but if you prefer the scent of roses, you should find a more powdery fragrance.
