Superfoods for shiny strands

Superfoods for shiny strands

Superfoods have gotten a lot of attention in recent years for warding off certain diseases, but did you know that they can also give you healthier hair? Sometimes, no matter how much we coat our mane with de-frizzing serum and deep conditioner, it still feels dry and looks dull - and the culprit might be your diet. Whether you've always wanted thicker tresses or luminous locks, try noshing on the following foods for a dramatic difference.

Oily fish is key to shinier strands. Glamour magazine suggested eating any that are high in omega fatty acids, such as mackerel and salmon. These options can help build stronger hair follicles at the roots while moisturizing the scalp, thereby simultaneously preventing dandruff and hair loss. Shellfish offer similar benefits as well. Don't be fooled by their tiny size, because Glamour noted that shrimp are chock full of vitamin D, B13, iron, zinc and protein, all of which are essential for your dream 'do. Oysters have high levels of vitamins and minerals as well, including folic acid, which can make your hair more resilient.

Noshing on nuts provides your hair with a bevy of nutrients that can enhance your tresses. According to Glamour, pecans and cashews are both good choices, but Brazil nuts and walnuts are especially ideal. Walnuts contain a powerful combination of protein, biotin, vitamin E and copper, which act as a force field around your tresses, preventing any damage from the sun. Brazil nuts have a similar capability, and as an added perk, can help give your hair color a boost. Sprinkle them on yogurt, cereal or even pasta to give your locks a lift.

Sweet Potatoes
This superfood is packed with beta carotene, the same antioxidant in carrots that can combat the effects of aging. Glamour noted that while digesting it, your body turns beta carotene into vitamin A, which helps improve scalp circulation and facilitate hair growth. For extra credit, steam, bake or roast them with a drizzle of olive oil, which is known to promote a lustrous mane.

Guac, anyone? Cynthia Pasquella, a certified nutritionist, told PopSugar that avocados are rich in vitamins E and B, which help accelerate hair growth. Additionally, they contain monounsaturated fats, which hydrate the hair follicles. Go ahead and spread some avocado on your sandwich or add slices to your salad for a noticeable hair transformation - in other words, thicker, stronger tresses.
