Cut it right: The best pixie cut for you

If you're tired of fussing with your long, unruly locks every morning, or would like a dramatic change from your basic hairstyle, then the pixie cut might be for you. From Anne Hathaway's dramatic "Les Miserables" makeover to Michelle Williams' sophisticated strands, the pixie cut has made a striking comeback on the red carpet - and it's no wonder why. The timeless hairstyle requires very little maintenance, looks great for every occasion and adds an edge to otherwise girly looks.

Despite what you might think, the pixie cut works on many hair types and face shapes, so there's no need to worry about pulling it off. With the right style and hair products, you'll be saying goodbye to your locks in no time.

Modern bowl cut
Once Anne Hathaway grew out her boyish "Les Mis" haircut, she debuted a stunning pixie with rounded edges - a stylish, grown-up alternative to the childhood bowl cut. This style, which features more volume on the top and sides, works best with longer face shapes. Using a razor on the ends of the hair adds some movement to the cut and keeps it from looking too much like helmet, hairstyle Tony Buckett told Allure magazine. Buckett suggests blow-drying the hair with a paddle brush to boost the volume.

Sleek and chic
One of the most famous pixie haircuts was made famous by British fashion icon Twiggy in the 1960s. The sleek, side-parted cropped cut changed the way of the pixie for decades to come, inspiring 21st century starlets such as Emma Watson, and looks great on both oval and round face shapes. When rocking the Twiggy crop, make a deep side-part and blow-dry your hair in the same direction with a small round brush to smooth out the bumps and frizz. Smooth strands with a ceramic straightening iron, then complete the slicked-back look with a lightweight shine spray like the Steiner Gloss Mist Shine Spray, which creates an all-over sheen.

Textured waves
The pixie cut is not only for those with naturally straight or fine hair. A textured pixie that's cut like a short shag works great for hair that's on the curlier or thicker side. Have your hairstylist keep the back and sides shorter than the top and bangs. For a piece-y  look, twist the ends of your hair with your fingers and a dab of styling pomade, such as the Steiner Discipline Styling Taffy, to separate and enhance the layers.
