Three blush rules you need to know

Three blush rules you need to know

You've probably witnessed a blush faux pas or two in your time - a too-bright circle on the apple of a woman's cheek can look garish, while a stripe of color stretching up to the temple can look harsh. Blush seems like one of the most basic beauty products to apply, and it can be - once you know the rules.

Even if you have been applying blush since junior high school, it's never too late to learn these three simple rules that could boost your glow even more.

Rule #1: Pick a natural color
The most flattering blush colors are those that look like a natural flush - this is the key to a believable look.

Allure Magazine reports that there is some room for variation in blush color, but generally it's best to choose hues based on the undertones of your skin. Women with blue or pink tones to their skin are better off with makeup products that have a cooler color base, like Colorescience Mineral Blush Cheek Colore in Blushing Bride. Women whose skin has olive or yellow tones should opt for a warmer hue of blush.

Rule #2: Make sure it matches your real flush
Even if you've chosen the right color, stripes and splotches of blush are evidence that placement matters, too. While there are some techniques for applying blush that can make your face look thinner or more full, generally it's a good idea to follow your natural flush.

To figure out where you should apply blush, look in the mirror next time you feel warm or are blushing naturally. You might find that you have a little color deeper down on your cheeks, or some on the bridge of your nose. When you apply blush, make sure you cover these areas for a natural-looking glow.

Rule #3: Layer products
Some women with oily skin layer on a powder before they apply blush so the pigment goes on smoothly. This is actually an important step for all women, no matter if their skin is oily or dry. If you prefer no coverage from foundation, dust your skin with a translucent powder like the Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30 Brush Sunscreen in All Clear Matte. This will give you a smooth surface for blush application while also protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.
