How to pack your travel makeup case
Packing your makeup bag for a vacation or business trip can be more stressful than picking out your day-to-day ensembles. It might seem like you're at a loss when trying to fit all your beloved cosmetics into your overflowing case, but with the right travel and beauty tips you can make even the tiniest bag seem roomy:
Keep it light
When preparing for your getaway, leave your heavy-duty makeup bag at home and instead pick up a smaller case. This will force you to take only the essentials and leave the rest behind. Also, a more compact makeup bag will keep all your products snugly packed, so you don't have to worry about them being jostled and potentially breaking. Makeup artist Kristofer Buckle suggested to O, The Oprah Magazine that transparent makeup bags work best because they allow you to quickly track down your various products.
Make it strategic
When you're in a rush, it might be tempting to throw all your tubes of mascara, foundation and lipgloss into your case without a care. However, this will not only make it more difficult for you to find your makeup items, but will also lead to possible leakage. While some makeup kits come in perfectly packed compartments, most do not. Be strategic and plan out some time for you to neatly fit your makeup into your case. Heavier products, such as bottles of foundation, should be placed at the bottom of the bag, while more delicate items, such as pressed powder and blush, should be near the top. A good method is to just start from the bottom and work your way up.
Save the brush
Makeup brushes are especially delicate. Cramming these must-have tools into your bag at awkward angles can tear the bristles and lessen the overall quality of the brushes. While Buckle told the magazine that he prefers packing his brushes in a separate pencil case, you don't want to be lugging around too many bags. Instead, choose a makeup case that has side pockets and holders hidden inside that are specially made for various sized brushes.
Security breach
TSA rules state the passengers flying on commercial planes can only bring liquid items onboard if they're in 3.4-ounce bottles or less. Put the products you need during the flight, such as a small vial of hand lotion and some lipgloss, in a clear, plastic storage baggie with a secure fastener, and tuck the rest away in your checked luggage. All liquid products carried with you into the cabin must be stored in the same plastic baggie.
