Your beauty foods shopping list
Next time you make your grocery list, think about adding foods that support healthy skin, hair and nails.
As Jessica Wu, a dermatologist in Los Angeles and author of popular skin-health book "Feed Your Face," told Prevention magazine, "There's a growing body of research showing that diet really does affect your complexion."
Here are some items to add to your beauty foods shopping list:
Salmon
Salmon contains a high level of omega-3 fatty acids, which play a large role in promoting smooth, hydrated skin, according to Fitness magazine. In addition, it also contains vitamin D for bone health and selenium, which strengthens your skin's defenses against skin damage. For the most nutrient bang-for-your-buck, choose wild salmon instead of the farm-raised variety.
Kale
You slather on your SPF every day, but did you know the foods you eat can also up your sun protection? Veggies like kale are great at doing just that, thanks to the lutein and zeaxanthin they contain. These two nutrients neutralize the free radicals that are a by-product of UV rays, and in turn help prevent wrinkles, Prevention noted.
Mixed berries
Those free radicals mentioned above turn up in your skin as fine lines, sagginess and damage - but you can help mitigate these effects and prevent them in the first place by loading up on antioxidants. Berries in particular have a high content of antioxidants as well as vitamin C, a nutrient that boosts collagen production, according to Shape magazine. Try blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or blackberries - or a delicious mix!
Green tea
Coffee may be your drink of choice - but have you considered adding a cup or two of green tea to your day? You have good reason to - according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, individuals who consumed a drink containing green tea polyphenols just once a day for 12 weeks showed smoother, more elastic skin and had a quarter less sun damage compared to the control group, Prevention explained. So sip up!
