Cannabidiols (CBD) and hemp is the talk of the town in skincare products and luxury spa treatments. The popular green leaf has quickly become a staple of all things related to health and wellness, and this, unfortunately, has created some confusion for consumers. Before purchasing a product containing CBD or hemp, it's important to know the difference between the two.

Cannabis Sativa and THC

Cannabis Sativa is the cannabis plant species that includes marijuana and hemp variations. The amount of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, in the plant is what differentiates hemp from marijuana. Plants with less than 0.3% THC are considered hemp plants, and those with more are considered marijuana plants. The one thing CBD and hemp have in common is that neither has psychoactive effects on the user. THC on the other hand, is the psychoactive compound in marijuana that gives the user a feeling of being “high.”

 CBD Oil

CBD can be found in the two different types of Cannabis Sativa plants; hemp and marijuana. Hence why there is so much confusion and questions on the effects of this popular oil. CBD can significantly reduce anxiety and depression without the psychoactive effects that THC in marijuana would cause. CBD oil also relieves inflammation and improves the conditions of dryness, acne, rosacea, and eczema  (read more about CBD in products). According to the World Health Organization, CBD presents no risk of toxicity or dependence.

Hemp

This is the first of the “greens” to make it to the shelves in the form of beauty products and supplements. Skincare OX says it has a similar composition of fats and amino acids as our natural skin. This makes hemp a great moisturizer for all skin types, as it is less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts.

To be safe, always check with your doctor before incorporating CBD and hemp into your lifestyle. Use of hemp and CBD is still being studied. Information on the prolonged use and side effects of certain products may change.
