Healthy smoothies to improve your skin

Healthy smoothies to improve your skin

Eating well is a major component of maintaining a healthy weight, but the nutrients in certain foods benefit more than just your belly and thighs. Leafy green veggies like kale and baby spinach contain antioxidants, healthy fatty acids and vitamins C and K, which have restorative and protective benefits for the skin as well as other parts of the body. Yet, you may get bored eating nothing but salads all summer. Instead, you can throw a cup of these greens in a blender with some fruit and other healthy ingredients and whip up a tasty and nutritious smoothie that will help keep your skin soft and glowing all summer long.

"Smoothies are a great way to get all of the nutrients you need for beautiful skin in just one drink," celebrity dietician Ashley Koff told TotalBeauty.com. "Even better, since they're so easy to make and take with you, they can replace the junky, highly-processed fast food that's so bad for your skin."

Go green for smooth, radiant skin
There are countless smoothie recipes that incorporate spinach and kale, which leave you with a green, nutritious blended beverage perfect for a hot summer day. Try making your own creation with your favorite fruit, a handful or two of spinach, low-fat or Greek yogurt and a few ice cubes. A good combination is spinach, banana, vanilla yogurt, vanilla almond milk and peanut butter. Your smoothie won't taste like a salad either, as the fruit and yogurt will overpower the taste of the spinach. The potassium in bananas can help fight against pesky undereye circles. You can also try coconut yogurt instead of dairy-based yogurt, as The Huffington Post reports dairy can exacerbate acne issues. Plus, coconut yogurt is chock full of probiotics that will help keep you healthy.

Don't forget your regular routine
While sipping on nutritious smoothies can help improve your skin, they can't do all the work alone. Using beauty products like Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Facial Wash to remove dead skin cells can prevent your complexion from looking dull, and a daily moisturizer is key to preventing wrinkles. You'll also want to use sunscreen products with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect against the sun's damaging rays, which can speed up your skin's aging process.

The combination of a healthy diet full of nutritious produce and a good skincare regimen will help ensure your skin is at its best all summer long and well into fall.
