Beauty tips for life-changing hair

Kate Winslet's character in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" put it best when she said: "I apply my personality in a paste." Major life changes can sometimes call for dramatic hair transformations. Whether it's a bad breakup, new job, cross-country move or you're simply feeling hair anxiety, cutting or dyeing your locks can not only make your head feel much lighter, but also your mood. If you're a brunette who always wanted to be blonde, or a long-haired gal that's been pining for a short bob, now's your chance.

Before you do anything too drastic to your hairstyle, make sure you have the right beauty tips and products:

Hair color
For many, dyeing locks a whole different color is a terrifying prospect. However, a change in your hair palette is sometimes what you need to spice up your life and shake up your mood.

Brunettes who want to go blonde should always consider skin tone first. The most important rule to follow is that you never want your hair to match the shade of your skin. If you have an olive complexion, opt for a honey-golden blonde, while those with a pink undertone to their skin should skip out on warmth and choose lighter, cooler blondes. If you're dyeing your hair at home, Julia Youssef, executive director of L'Oréal Paris's Hair Color Technical Center and Product Evaluation, told Marie Claire magazine that cool tones are the easiest to achieve when standing over your bathroom sink because they require less depth.

Likewise, lighter-haired women who want a darker shade should look for a brown that has some depth so it doesn't lay dull and flat. Use a rich chocolate brown as your base hair color, then add in darker lowlights for a fuller look. If you want to go the darkest you can go without breaking out the black dye, a cool espresso brown exudes a sultry vibe.

There are, of course, more shades than just blonde and brown. You can switch it up and try something slightly offbeat, opt for a hue that has extra layers of eye-popping colors, such as shimmery eggplant black or a rich auburn with dark red highlights.

Length and shape
Nothing says drama like chopping off all your hair into a pixie cut, but if you don't want to part with all your locks, opt for a shoulder-grazing bob instead. The so-called demi-bobs are stylish, timeless and perfectly manageable for those who never had short hair. For a bit of edge, try a wavy bob with roughed-up edges or a sharp asymmetrical style with a side part. Of course, a classic bob with even ends, wispy bangs and a sleek finish using a gloss, such as the Steiner Gloss Mist Shine Spray, will also surely lift your spirits.
